god. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, september 14, 2012. captioning funded by cbs good morning. i'm terrell brown. u.s. diplomatic missions are on high alert on concerns of anti-american protests. egypt remains the site of the longest and largest protest. this morning demonstrations moved from the u.s. embassy to the administrates of cairo. libyan officials said four arrests have been made on the attack on the u.s. consulate. according to libyan interior minister the attack was a two pronged operation, first the consulate in benghazi was stormed where chris steven's and another american were killed. the rest of the staff was evacuated to a safe house. that was raided hours later. two other americans died in that assault. libyan officials said militants may have been tipped about the safe house location by someone in libyan security. susan mcginnis is following this from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. washington is bracing for more

violence across the muslim world today, this is after muslim religious authorities called for mass demonstrations after the weekly friday prayers. protests continue in cairo, egypt for e fourth day in a row. anger over an american made anti-islam film has spread from egypt to libya to yemen. u.s. officials have beefed up security at embassies around the world. >> directed my administration to do whatever is necessary to protect all americans who are serving abroad, one of my highest priorities as president. >> reporter: officials peer the demonstrations will escalate today after several muslim clerics called on muslims to join the protest after the traditional friday prayers. libyan officials believe armed militants used the protests as a cover to attack the u.s. consulate in benghazi. four americans including ambassador christopher stevens died in the attack. libyan officials said they made

four arrests. u.s. officials believe the radical islamic group, ansar al sharia, an offshoot of al qaeda is behind the deadly attacks. president obama issued a warning to terrorists. >> i want people around the world to hear me to all those who would do us harm. no act of terror will go unpunished. >> reporter: the political short fallout here continues. stemming from mitt romney's criticism of president obama's handling of the embassy attacks. >> the next president of the united states, mitt romney! . >> reporter: at a rally in virginia a protester cut romney off when he started to talk about libya. >> what a tragedy to lose a wonderful -- a wonderful. >> reporter: mitt romney's attacks of the president the day after the libyan killings leaving some to believe he may have acted too soon. >> they realize they may have jumped the gun. don't get your foot into something and have the waters

are closed again. a teacher strike shut down the schools for five days. this morning negotiators report some progress. latest be talks ended this morning. the union president hopes schools reopen on monday. justices on pennsylvania's supreme court did not say when they would have a decision on the state's tough new voter identification law. the court heard arguments on whether the law poses a right to vote. it requires a photo i.d. to vote. >> too little time, too many people affected, and there's no place in the statute which guarantees that qualified electors can get the i.d. they need to vote. >> simply a means to establish that you are in fact who you say you are and, therefore, a registered voter. >> pennsylvania legislature passed the law six months ago. democrats say the law will allow

to win the state in it's 20 electoral votes. the federal reserve is launching a new effort to boost the economy and make borrowing cheaper. >> reporter: it's the first time the federal reserve has committed to boost the economy every month and keep interest rates low until unemployment goes down. fed chairman ben bernanke said the economic recovery especially in the u.s. job market is stuck. >> this is a main street policy because what we're about here is trying to get jobs going, we're trying to create more employment. >> reporter: specifically the fed will buy $40 billion worth of mortgage bonds every month. the idea being to drive mortgage rates even lower than their historic lows now. bernanke says if it works the plan should increase home buying, help the stock market and drive up consumer spending. >> if people feel their financial situation is better because their 401(k) looks better, their house is worth more, they are more willing to go out and spend and that will

provide the demand that firms need in order to hire and invest. >> reporter: while wall street loved the announcement the fed's open ended commitment to keep interest rates low has a down side. it could hurt retirees living on fixed incomes and anyone invested in savings accounts or money market funds. republican nominee mitt romney who has already promised to fire ben bernanke called the fed's intervention confirmation that president obama's policies have not worked. he said we should be creating wealth not dollars. and bernanke may have timed this increase in hiring as an election gift to the president. b bern rejected that notion saying the timing was related to a stagnant economy not to politics. how would the markets react to ben bernanke's announcement? ashley morrison is here. >> reporter: asian markets

rallied on the fed's news. tokyo nikkei added 2% to hit a three week high while the hang seng gained 3%. wall street liked the news. the dow was up 206 points while the nasdaq added 41. the fed announcement also sent the price of gold soaring. gold rose 2% to just over $1772 per ounce. fed action carries the risk of inflation, making gold safe-haven for investors. a federal judge mass temporarily blocked a new law aimed at preventing members of congress and others from making inside stock trades. it requires 30,000 government employees to disclose details about their financial transactions. the judge ruled that the law could not immediately be enforced on executive branch employees because it infringes on their right to privacy but the injunction done affect enforcement of law to members of congress or their staff. new look for u.s. today the
